Cats have an extra scent organ called the vomeronasal gland in the roof of their mouth. This special pathway allows scents collected in the nose and mouth to be carried to the brain.
Catnip has an ingredient called Nepataloctone oil and it was found to change cats' behavior. It mimics cats' feline sex hormones which display behaviors such as affection, relaxation, and happiness.
